Meet the staff

Meet your Student Housing staff

When you live in VIU Student Housing, you’re never on your own. Behind the scenes and alongside you is a team of dedicated staff – up to 30 strong – who are here to make your time at VIU safe and enjoyable.

Your housing staff network is comprised of:

  • professional staff who oversee programs and community standards
  • housekeeping and desk staff who keep daily life running smoothly
  • student leaders who live in residence with you

Our staff are here to:

  • answer your questions
  • connect you with the right resources
  • organize events
  • ensure Student Housing is a welcoming place for all

Professional staff

Community Life comprises a team of professional staff who work to support the overall Community Life community. They:

  • supervise student staff
  • follow up on behavioural concerns
  • oversee and support residence programming
  • offer you further support as needed

More information about the professional staff’s roles in responding to behavioural concerns can be found in the Community Standards section of this handbook.

Support staff

Student Housing Services has many other staff who are here to help support you in your time living in Student Housing.

Front desk staff are your first point of contact when you enter the Cedar Centre Student Housing Services office. They can help you with:

  • keys
  • questions about fees
  • special mail delivery
  • finding answers to residence-related questions

Housekeeping staff are responsible for the basic cleaning and tidying of common areas in the Student Housing community. They work to provide you with a clean and safe living environment. They also complete room inspections each term.

Please remember that Student Housing Service staff are an integral part of the Student Housing community. Like you, they have the right to be treated with respect and kindness. Likewise, they must treat others the same way.

Community Life staff

Community Life provides many opportunities for you to learn, develop and engage with your communities.

Student staff

Student staff members act as your primary resource for living in Student Housing. CLs and Senior Community Leaders (SCLs) live in Student Housing with you and perform the following roles:

  • conflict resolution/mediation support
  • crisis intervention
  • provide a safe space to talk
  • organize and host programs and events
  • address violations of the Community Standards

Student staff members are an integral part of the residence and university community. Here are a few points to consider about CLs:

  1. They are not your parent. You can't expect them to solve problems for you.
  2. They are also students. This isn't their only responsibility.
  3. They are not against you. They are here to help you.
  4. Like you, they have good and bad days, although their goal is always to support you.

Community Leaders

Community Leaders (CLs) play an integral role in the creation of a healthy, safe and thriving environment. They are placed in Student Housing to help you have a network of people to reach out to for questions, help and solutions to problems you may be experiencing. CLs are heavily involved in community life. They help create healthy relationships within Student Housing.

Connect with your CL to:

  • join your building or floor's group chat
  • attend events in the community
  • get involved in activities

Make sure you follow us on Instagram (@viuresidence) and keep an eye on the posters throughout the Student Housing buildings to see what’s happening.

Senior Community Leaders

Senior Community Leaders (SCLs) are CLs (students) with additional responsibilities. SCLs work with the Community Life Coordinator (CLC), Assistant Manager, CLs and others to create a healthy and supportive campus community. In addition to their CL responsibilities, SCLs take charge of:

  • community-wide programming
  • CL team scheduling
  • Orientation
  • programming and program management
  • low-level conduct
  • organization and administration as needed

As CLs are highly visible and engaging members of the Student Housing community. They help you get involved and build up your interpersonal skills and academic and leadership potential.
